Will They “Like” Your Organization

Yesterday Mark Zuckerburg of Facebook revealed the next move for his company to expand the social media giants reach into making the web more social.  The team at Facebook has developed the Open Graph API allowing site developers the ability to add the Facebook “Like” feature (commonly used on their wall posting and news feed pages) to any web page.  ”Helicopter view” thinking is that this will allow a visitor to“like” a particular page which will in-turn notify your Facebook friends that you have visited and enjoyed specific content at a particular site.

This new “greater” socialization of the web can have great impact on several facets of your site and web presence including:

  • Quality or visual appeal to your target demographic
  • Perceived value of content at visitor level
  • Ability to engage and connect instantly
  • Opportunity to aggregate information to develop future content

Churches, non-profits and businesses must realize this technology is another paradigm shift in how the world interacts with the web and should begin to take steps now, to fully understand how this free tool can be leveraged to help their organization better connect with the culture and the audience they hope to reach.

Should The Church Consider Ad Support

As a full time “ministry for media” participant it’s amazing to watch the rapid pace in which web casting, both live and on demand, is impacting and helping ministries grow and reach new audiences locally and globally.

Based on offerings at the recent CES show the convergence of web to the family room plasma / TV is rapidly approaching. Up to this point our clients at 316 Networks have resisted delivering advertising alongside or within their content. As ministry moves closer to being a sole broadcast entity their will be more opportunity to engage some form of ad supported streaming.

This article in Ad Age describes some of the latest in how Madison Ave is offering online inventory to advertisers. Just wondering if someone will step up with an ad aggregator that suites ministry. What are our thoughts?

Pew… Follow The Dew

MtDewLogo2005

Good to be back posting. Much has happened to my career since my Echo postings. Have moved from the Ministry Media Integration space into Ministry Media – Digital Asset distribution space. Currently working as Client Manager and Media Consultant to Ministries for 316 Networks.  Having the time of my life.   Anyway… so much for the career update.

Was just reading an article in the latest Ad Age Mag about Pepsi’s Mt. Dew brand pulling user generated content from viewers to their 12seconds.tv web site asking for a video promoting their brand.  The Ad world has been wrestling with how to monetize the new digital space model while big brands and marketers continue to re-define digital marketing methods.

Was just thinking how much impact a ministry could have on the culture by leveraging similar initiatives – extracting testimonies or positive church / ministry experiences.  When online viewers see something real they know it – and believe it.   This User Generated Content Widget offers ministry an excellent way pull, review and post UGC  to their site.

Un-Comfortable?

Does He Look Comfortable?

Does He Look Comfortable?

Living the Christian life means different things to different people (although it shouldn’t).  I dare say it seems most “church goers” these days require (strange using the term require – keep reading…) several key elements for worship. The Music should be of the genre they enjoy at a volume they are comfortable with.  Same spot in same pew each week – check!  The room temperature just right- not too hot or cold – Check!  Sermon make you feel good about your Savior and the fact that you can call yourself a Christian – Check!  Oh, don’t forget, the media should be of the best quality with good camera shots, the proper legible font on for the lyric slide and good house lighting so we can see our bible – check!  Lets go to lunch…

Don’t get me wrong here, I believe in perfection and using modern technology when it comes to worship, I just don’t believe we were called to design cookie cutter services and set programming to “not upset any specific group”.  The problem with this current (dare I say) secular definition of Christian worship is that Jesus never called us to be comfortable. Jesus used several illustrations and stories to explain his ministry.  Everything from a stormy sea to multitudes of hungry people came to know him through radical events.  Paul went through unspeakable trials for the gospel.  I doubt those prisons were climate controlled or had 60″ Plasma’s.

Back in the 90’s our family was communicating with a missionary couple from Brazil.  When they furloughed to the US for a few weeks they came to ATL to visit our family and attended church.  I’ll never forget the comment the husband made after Sunday church.  ”That is the first time we ever went to church to watch it on TV.”  They were used to having church on a picnic table in the hot brazilian sun with a bible and an interpreter.

I’m asking here… Is today’s church prepared to be radical for Jesus?  (Radical might be a but uncomfortable.)  Worship and accompanying media should be designed to usher in the Holy Spirit and gently move the worshiper into an uncomfortable (yes – life changing) experience with Christ.  As my friend Phil Cooke stated at Echo – Christian Media should not be designed for Christians but to reach the lost culture looking for answers and a relationship.  There – I said it… comfortable?

Healthy portions from #Echo…

meatand3It’s been a wild few days following the Echo Conference wrap up last Friday.  Its funny to look back at my expectations going into the conference.  I had plans and a project in mind as I went into the three days and God took those plans and turned them up side down and rocked me silly.  First, I went in with “my” plans (ehem, not His), turns out – my thinking was way too small (imagine that).  Oh sure, I have read books by a few of the speakers and followed some of the presenters blogs and on Twitter but nothing prepared me for the incredibly huge vision that God had waiting through the information and keynotes delivered.

There was no way I could single out one person, all the Keynote addresses delivered information that I was there to HEAR.  Phil, Phil, Mark and Ben along with the Saturday panel all delivered healthy portions of visionary information, fresh perspective and ideas that helped form and shape a totally new way to think about sharing the Kingdom message through new technology and media outlets.

The conference also exposed me to several people in ministry that are helping drive and shape the new Kingdom Message delivery.  Stay tuned – there’s more to come from this freshly anointed media outlet…

Echo Conference Day Two

Picture-2Long and fruitful day at Echo 09.  Mass of info and encouragement from the likes of Phil Cooke, Mark Steele, Carlos Whittaker (Ragamuffin Soul) and Dawn Nicole Baldwin and more…  Too much to post right now.  Going to organize notes and thoughts and post closing thoughts on the entire conference tomorrow.

Today I came away with this collective thought – “Creatives in ministry are story tellers using technology.  Not for technologies sake but for Christ. So use the technology to create and deliver your ministry story to the culture (not the church!)”.  Thanks to those who invested their time in our ministries today.  Excellence – which Christ deserves – Amen!

Winding down after Day one.  I hate to use an over used term but it was a bit like sipping water from a Fire hose.  Started with Drew Goodmanson out of San Diego, Kaleo Church discussing Ministry’s approach to the Internet and going Beyond Web 2.0.  Excellent info and has begun some interesting work with outside firms studying actual web viewing statistics within the Christian Community and church attenders.  Go here to take part in the Unconventional Method.

Next was leveraging Social Media for Ministry.  Cynthia Ware and Dawn Nicole Baldwin shard several case studies on ministry using new and ways to use both web based and mobile social media tools to move the church to more dialogue and away from the standard monologue.  Both presenters maintain helpful blogs that will be posted in this blogroll.  Several seminars and the keynote used Twitter allowing the attendees to post questions to the presenter and speakers.

Following some bustin worship with the Watermark Church Praise team the Father of the Veggie Tales Phil Visher wrapped up with a moving and compelling keynote presentation outlining his rise (and subsequent fall) from fame in the world of Gospel sharing Vegetables.  Phil’s new gig is called Jelly Telly . Kudos to Phil for being so transparent and grounded.  Day two looks to be just as informative and inspiring.  More later…
